Principal Clarinet at the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra
Silvio Guitian joined the Met Orchestra in 2024 as Principal Clarinet. Previously, he held the position of Associate Principal and Eb clarinet with the Kansas City Symphony starting in 2019 and has also performed with the San Diego Symphony. Guitian has enjoyed various chamber music opportunities, performing as part of the Met Chamber Ensemble at Carnegie Hall and participating in Kansas City’s “Happy Hour” chamber series. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Guitian studied clarinet with Richie Hawley at Rice University and received his bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, where he was a student of Richard Hawkins.
He has participated in the Pacific Music Festival, the National Orchestral Institute, and the Aspen Music Festival, and served as principal clarinetist for the 2018 New York String Orchestra Seminar. Additionally, he has toured with the Youth Orchestra of the Americas and the National Youth Orchestra. Guitian won the Oberlin Concerto competition and was featured on NPR’s “From the Top.” Passionate about teaching, he has worked closely with the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestras and the Asociación Nacional de Conciertos in Panama City. Outside of music, he enjoys cooking, solving logic puzzles, and playing disc golf and pickleball.
