Sung Wei-Te

Sung was appointed General Director of the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in April, 2021 and has been a tenure professor at the National Taiwan Normal University since 1998. Sung has been an advocate of both beginner and advanced clarinet education. He has published texts on clarinet performance as well as beginner clarinet methods. Upon graduation from the National Taipei University of the Arts, Sung joined the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in 1989.

Sung studied at the National Fresnes Conservatory from 1990-1994. He won first prize in the Leopold-Bellan Competition, as well as the chamber and clarinet division competitions at the conservatory. He was also awarded funding in 2013 from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education for one year of residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. As an avid chamber musician, Sung was a cofounder of the prominent Magic Clarinet Quartet and the Wings of the Angel Symphony Orchestra. In March of 2007, in order to continue the promotion of clarinet music, he founded the Hey Seeds Clarinet ensemble.

As a passionate supporter of new music, Sung has commissioned and premiered numerous works by Taiwanese composers. Sung enjoys hobbies such as drawing, reading comics, going to the theater, camping and baseball. Since his appointment as director of the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, he has dedicated himself to bringing the wonderful sounds of the TSO to Taipei and the world.
